37 Built-in Stitches

The Brother ST371HD Automatic Needle Threader

Jam Resistant Drop-in Top Bobbin

That’s it for the technical part of this review. Next I’m going to talk about my experience with this sewing machine.

What I Like

1

Half-Automated Needle Threader

The needle threader functionality is a sure time-saver. With just a push of a lever, the thread will pass through the needle.

It is not as convenient as a fully automated threader, nevertheless, it does make things a bit easy rather than doing it manually.

2

Stitches

It comes with an option of 37 built-in stitch features to choose from. It covers most of the basic stitches.

3

Six Presser feet

It is provided with six presser feet which are quite easy to fix and work on. You can also easily adjust the feet height to accommodate more layers without issues.

4

Three needle options

It comes with three needle options to choose from:

#16 – for thick fabrics like canvas and denim
#14 – for multiple layers
#11 – for lightweight fabrics

Note: You also get a twin needle with the machine

5

Easy Stitch Selector

Stitch selection can’t get easier than this. Just turn the dial on the side to the right stitch number, and there you go!

6

Drop feed option

This is yet another vital function for the free-motion sewing and quilting process.

7

Metal needle plate

The other brands at this price range provide only a plastic needle plate. However, the ST371HD comes with a metal needle plate that guarantees durability.

8

Free arm Option

The machine comes with a free arm option which can be highly useful when you require more workspace, especially when working on intrinsic details or large fabric.

The free arm option is removable and it can be used as a storage space too! Cool!

9

Top load drop-in bobbin

The drop-in bobbin is very convenient to use and remove. It also comes with a transparent cover to enable you to keep a check on the amount of thread left-over.

It also comes with a jam-resistant feature which is all so trouble-free.

10

Free accessories

The ST371HD comes with a bunch of free accessories that help make sewing a pleasurable experience.

You get a needle set, 6 sewing feet, four bobbins, extras spool spin, an instructional DVD, a screw-driver, two-spool caps, and a dust cover.

What I Dislike

1

Not sturdy

Though the sewer claims to be crafted for heavy-duty work, it is not heavy-duty. The sewer tends to get slower when worked on for long hours.

2

No Needle up/down button

The sewer just misses a vital and important feature. This would be a real handicap when you’re trying to work around the fabric edges. You will have to move the needle manually every time you need to.

3

No automated start/stop button

The sewer does not come with an automated start/stop option. You have to start the sewer manually by moving the feet.

4

No automated thread tension control and speed control

The sewer comes only with a partially automated thread tension control and less advantageous than fully automated thread tension control.

It is also not provided with an automated speed control feature. This is yet another drawback especially when you have to handle multiple fabrics and stitches.

Summary of pros and cons

Pros
It has 37 in-built stitches to choose from
Automated needle threader function
Reasonably priced
The sewer setup is pretty easy and convenient
It can work through various types of fabric with ease
Metal needle plate and sewer chassis for durability
Low maintenance
Comes with a rubber base for grip
Cons
It’s not a true heavy-duty model
It’s not durable and stable
Low stitching speed
LED light is not bright enough
Does not come with an up/down needle button feature

Who Should buy

This is an obvious choice for people who are looking at a sewer to work on heavy fabrics like canvas and denim.

The ST371HD is crafted to work exclusively on hard to work fabrics and material. Though the sewer has some obvious setbacks like not having a fully automated threader function, no needle up/down button, and no automatic start/stop button, it does come with a decent number of features for its price.

The sewer is reliable, stable, and durable with a 25-year warranty. However, if you are a person who works frequently with fabrics like denim and canvas, then this might not be the right choice.

It is, of course, a decent sewer with quite impressive features at an affordable rate, but not ideal to handle the excessive workload.

People Also Ask

Can I use it for quilting?

The Brother ST371HD sewing machine is not designed for quilting projects. However, it can still be used for quilting if you drop the feed dogs. This will enable you to use free-motion quilting techniques, allowing you to move the fabric freely beneath the needle.

Free-motion quilting does require more skill than regular quilting, but with some practice and patience, you’ll be able to create beautiful, intricate designs with the Brother ST371HD. Additionally, if you’re new to quilting, you should have a look at this post

Is Brother ST371HD good for beginners?

The Brother ST371HD sewing machine is an excellent choice for those just starting out with the craft of sewing. It is a mechanical machine, which means it is simple to use and understand, even for someone with no prior experience. It offers a wide range of stitches and settings that can be adjusted to fit the user’s needs, making it a great choice for those who are still learning how to sew. Its lightweight design also makes it easy to transport and store.

The Brother ST371HD comes with several helpful features that make it ideal for new sewers. It has an automatic needle threader, so you won’t have to worry about threading your needle by hand. It also features an adjustable presser foot pressure and a free arm for working on smaller projects. Additionally, its stitch speed control allows users to tailor their stitching speed to the project they’re working on. This helps ensure that each stitch is perfect and that beginners don’t get frustrated if they mess up.

Which sewing machine is better between Singer and Brother?

Singer sewing machines are known for being stronger and more durable, making them ideal for heavy-duty projects such as upholstery, quilting, and other home decor items. They are also known for their high-quality construction and stitch accuracy. However, they are typically more expensive than their Brother counterparts.

On the other hand, Brother sewing machines offer good value with many advanced features and settings. These include control over the exact stitches you’re using, as well as automatic thread cutting and speed control. This brand is usually cheaper than Singer models, making them a great choice for those on a budget who still want high-quality stitching.

Those looking for a durable and strong machine should consider a Singer, while those looking for an affordable machine with plenty of features should check out a Brother. Ultimately, it all comes down to your specific needs and preferences.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Brother ST371HD sewing machine is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable, user-friendly sewing machine. It has an impressive selection of features, including adjustable stitch length and width, multiple speed control, and an automatic needle threader. Additionally, it has a relatively affordable price point, making it a great value for money.

Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced seamstress, the Brother ST371HD will meet all your sewing needs. If you’re in the market for a durable and reliable sewing machine, then the Brother ST371HD is certainly worth considering.
