It is typically used in clothing and upholstery and is known for being durable and wrinkle-resistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also less likely to shrink than other fabrics in normal circumstances. But it\u2019s relatively resistant to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polyester is only prone to shrinking when blended with other fabrics such as cotton or linen and when exposed to hot water. It is heat pressed, making it more resistant to heat&nbsp;than other fibers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,&nbsp;<strong>when exposed to hot water<\/strong>, the moisture and heat combo may cause it to shrink. But they are not shrink-proof. Polyester shrinks because of three reasons:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"gspb_heading-id-gsbp-909e458a-b013\" class=\"gspb_heading gspb_heading-id-gsbp-909e458a-b013 \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moisture\"><\/span>Moisture\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Polyester slightly shrinks when exposed to moisture. This type of shrinking is called <a href=\"#references\" type=\"internal\" id=\"#references\" class=\"ek-link\">relaxation shrinkage<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0 Relaxation shrinkage shrinks the fabric by about less than one percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During production, polyester fibers are stretched. When you expose these fibers to moisture, the tension is released, and the fibers return to their original size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"gspb_heading-id-gsbp-6d79bb25-45ff\" class=\"gspb_heading gspb_heading-id-gsbp-6d79bb25-45ff \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Polyester_Blends\"><\/span>Polyester Blends<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Blending polyester with natural fibers such as wool is called <a href=\"#references\" type=\"internal\" id=\"#references\" class=\"ek-link\">felting shrinkage<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you expose the other fabric to heat or moisture, it will interlock with polyester.&nbsp;Interlocking causes the fibers to get thicker and shorter. In most cases, <strong>100% polyester will only shrink less than 5%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This amount of shrinkage often goes unnoticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Polyester blends, on the other hand, are more prone to shrinkage. Obviously, the amount of shrinkage will depend on the blend. Polyester is intended to be shrink resistant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cotton is one fabric that is highly prone to shrinking and stretching<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be wondering how much does cotton shrink? While there is no definitive answer to this question as the amount of shrinkage will depend on the type of cotton fabric, the weave, the weight and even the color, generally speaking, you can expect cotton to shrink anywhere from 3-5%. But it can shrink up to 20% in both width and length when it is laundered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, a&nbsp; polyester-cotton blend will shrink more than a pure polyester blend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It won\u2019t shrink as much as 100% cotton, but the blend of cotton will typically increase shrinkage by about 5% \u2013 10% compared to 100% polyester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"gspb_heading-id-gsbp-f94f27fe-2e1b\" class=\"gspb_heading gspb_heading-id-gsbp-f94f27fe-2e1b \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"At_What_Temperature_Does_Polyester_Shrink\"><\/span><span class=\"gspb_heading_highlight gspb-inview\">At What Temperature Does Polyester Shrink?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Polyester experiences the most shrinkage between 155\u00b0F and 175\u00b0F. But it will experience shrinkage as low as 140 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your polyester can experience this level of heat in the washer and the dryer.
